THOUGHT LEADERSHIP
Jewish Wellness Paper by Julie Emden. This includes the first two sections of Julie’s 50-page research report conducted on “Jewish Wellness”. The paper was originally published when EJL was a program of Jewish LearningWorks. It was created in partnership with the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco (JCCSF) and Peninsula Jewish Community Center of Foster City (PJCC) in 2013. We spent a year investigating the concept of “Jewish Wellness” and piloting programs related to this. This collaboration was originally named the “SF Bay Area Jewish Wellness Initiative” and resulted in the creation of “Shalem: A Jewish Wellness Initiative”, at the Peninsula JCC from 2012 to 2021. We are sharing the first two sections of the paper to inform, elevate and strengthen the field of Jewish Wellness.
Yoga and Jewish Wisdom article by Julie Emden about the practice of Yoga and Jewish Wisdom as a portal to Wellness.
Jewish Wellness: A Path to Wholeness article by Rabbi Lavey Derby about the impact of this work upon students of all faiths.

Jewish tradition has a great deal to offer anyone who seeks wholeness of body, mind, and spirit. Judaism’s wisdom, teachings, and practices support us to live flourishing, resourced, integrated, resilient lives with a joyful sense of balance and well-being. From ancient teachings to modern-day practices, we are encouraged to cultivate qualities— such as gratitude, joy, and thoughtful reflection— to enhance our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Embodied Jewish Learning partnered with the Peninsula Jewish Community Center in the conception and creation of Shalem: Jewish Wellness Initiative of the PJCC, which has received the Kol Ha Kavod JCC Association Biennial Excellence Award.
