Julie Emden (she/her), E-RYT-500, Halprin Practitioner, infuses her work with exploration, spirit and joy. She is passionate about awakening the body as a gateway to deep inner knowing and guides others in somatic explorations of Jewish wisdom teachings as a resource for living in balance and wholeness. A graduate of six fellowship and teaching certification programs related to her work as a Jewish educator, Iyengar-based yoga instructor and movement/expressive artist, Julie has over two decades of experience guiding others in exploring Jewish wisdom, text and practices via the body in a variety of settings.  Julie offers classes, workshops, on-line learning, retreats, teacher trainings, individual coaching, and strategic consultation and guidance for Jewish Wellness Initiatives.

Her teaching certifications include Movement-based Expressive Arts from Tamalpa Institute in Kentfield, CA; Dance Midrash, and Yoga and Jewish Spirituality from Elat Chayyim Center for Jewish Spirituality; and Iyengar-based Yoga from the Yoga Room in Berkeley, CA.

Julie co-created and co-founded with Rabbi Lavey Derby Shalem: A Jewish Wellness Initiative at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center in Foster City, CA. She served on faculty with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality’s (IJS) Educating for a Jewish Spiritual Life, a national pilot project to bring mindfulness and embodied practices to Jewish day schools and camps; various IJS retreats and cohort programs; and currently teaches for IJS’s Online Yoga Studio. She leads seasonal workshops and Sacred Dance Circles in Berkeley, California. She joins Diane Bloomfield and other teachers of Embodied Jewish Wisdom for week-long Torah Yoga retreats at Isabella Freedman Retreat Center most summers.

Julie holds a BA from the University of Michigan, and brings to EJL her prior experience and expertise as a community organizer and political activist with the PIRGs; as an Innovation Consultant, Staffing Consultant & Management Recruiter at Kaiser Permanente; and as a Program Director at Jewish LearningWorks (formerly Bureau of Jewish Education).

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Julie lives in Berkeley, California.
